Comparison of Fields

Introduction

Gravitational and electric fields share many similarities but also have important differences. Both are examples of force fields that act over a distance and follow inverse-square laws, but they differ in the way they interact with matter and the types of forces they produce. Understanding these similarities and differences helps students connect ideas across multiple areas of the AQA A Level Physics course.

AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.7.2.4 Comparison of Gravitational and Electric Fields

What You Need to Know

  • Compare the properties of gravitational and electric fields.

  • Explain that both fields obey inverse-square laws.

  • Understand that gravitational fields always produce attractive forces.

  • Explain that electric fields can produce both attractive and repulsive forces.

  • Compare gravitational potential with electric potential.

  • Compare gravitational field strength with electric field strength.

  • Recognise the similarities between Newton's Law of Gravitation and Coulomb's Law.

  • Solve qualitative and quantitative problems comparing gravitational and electric fields.
