Electric Potential

Introduction

Electric potential describes the work done per unit positive charge in bringing a small positive test charge from infinity to a point in an electric field. It provides a measure of the energy associated with a charge's position in the field and is essential for understanding electric potential difference, electric field strength and the motion of charged particles.

AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.7.2.3 Electric Potential

What You Need to Know

  • Define electric potential as the work done per unit positive charge in bringing a test charge from infinity to a point in an electric field.

  • State the unit of electric potential (volt, V or J C⁻¹).

  • Distinguish between electric potential and electric potential energy.

  • Calculate electric potential around a point charge.

  • Explain the relationship between electric potential and electric field strength.

  • Interpret electric potential gradients in both radial and uniform electric fields.

  • Compare electric potential with gravitational potential.

  • Solve quantitative problems involving electric potential and charged particles.
