Electric Field Strength

Introduction

Electric field strength describes the force experienced per unit positive charge at a point in an electric field. It allows students to predict how charged particles behave in the presence of electric fields and is fundamental to understanding electrostatics, charged particle motion and electric potential. This topic builds directly on Coulomb's Law and introduces the concept of electric field lines.

What You Need to Know

  • Define electric field strength as the force per unit positive charge.

  • State the unit of electric field strength (N C⁻¹ or V m⁻¹).

  • Calculate electric field strength using the appropriate equations.

  • Describe the electric field around point charges.

  • Draw and interpret electric field line patterns for positive and negative charges.

  • Explain the relationship between electric field strength and distance from a point charge.

  • Compare electric fields with gravitational fields.

  • Solve quantitative problems involving electric field strength and charged particles.
