Coulomb's Law
Introduction
Coulomb's Law describes the electrostatic force between two charged point objects. It shows that the force depends on the magnitude of the charges and the distance between them. This topic forms the foundation of electric fields and electrostatics, helping students understand how charged particles interact and providing an important comparison with Newton's Law of Gravitation.
AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.7.2.1 Coulomb's Law
What You Need to Know
-
State Coulomb's Law for the force between two point charges.
-
Understand that electrostatic force is directly proportional to the product of the charges.
-
Explain that electrostatic force is inversely proportional to the square of the separation between the charges.
-
Distinguish between attractive and repulsive electrostatic forces.
-
Compare Coulomb's Law with Newton's Law of Gravitation.
-
Apply Coulomb's Law to calculate the force between charged particles.
-
Understand the role of the permittivity of free space in Coulomb's Law.
-
Solve quantitative problems involving charge, force and separation.
