Newton's Laws in Gravitational Fields

Introduction

Newton's Laws of Motion can be applied to objects moving under the influence of gravity, from falling objects on Earth to planets orbiting the Sun. In this topic, students learn how gravitational forces produce acceleration and circular motion, allowing the motion of satellites, planets and other celestial bodies to be analysed using Newton's Laws. This topic forms an important bridge between mechanics and gravitational fields.

AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.7.1.1 Newton's Laws in Gravitational Fields

What You Need to Know

  • Apply Newton's Laws of Motion to objects moving in gravitational fields.

  • Recognise that gravity provides the centripetal force required for orbital motion.

  • Analyse the forces acting on satellites and planets.

  • Explain why objects in orbit are continuously accelerating despite travelling at constant speed.

  • Apply Newton's Second Law to motion under gravity.

  • Relate centripetal force to gravitational attraction for circular orbits.

  • Solve quantitative problems involving orbital motion and gravitational forces.

  • Interpret situations involving planets, moons and artificial satellites.

With Sarah's help my daughter managed to gain an A* in her Physics A Level exams (almost 100% on paper 2!) and was able to gain entry to UCL. We are so proud and cannot thank Sarah enough.

Sarah transformed my daughter's approach to Physics. Her examiner insight was invaluable for boosting her final GCSE grade from a 7 to a 9.
