Newton's Laws

Introduction

Newton's Laws of Motion form the foundation of classical mechanics and explain how forces affect the motion of objects. This topic introduces Newton's three laws, showing how forces produce acceleration, how objects behave when no resultant force acts, and how forces always occur in equal and opposite pairs. Understanding these laws is essential for solving a wide range of mechanics problems throughout the AQA A Level Physics course.

AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.4.2.2 Newton's Laws of Motion

What You Need to Know

  • State Newton's First Law and explain the concept of inertia.

  • State Newton's Second Law and apply it to calculate resultant force, mass and acceleration.

  • Understand that acceleration is proportional to the resultant force and inversely proportional to mass.

  • State Newton's Third Law and identify action-reaction force pairs.

  • Distinguish between balanced and unbalanced forces.

  • Apply Newton's Laws to analyse forces acting on objects in equilibrium and in motion.

  • Solve quantitative problems involving force, mass and acceleration.
