Circular Motion
Introduction
Circular motion occurs when an object moves in a circular path at constant speed. Although the speed remains constant, the direction of motion is continually changing, meaning the object is constantly accelerating towards the centre of the circle. This topic introduces centripetal acceleration and centripetal force, which are essential for understanding the motion of satellites, vehicles travelling around bends and particles moving in magnetic fields.
AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.4.2.6 Circular Motion
What You Need to Know
-
Describe uniform circular motion as motion at constant speed in a circular path.
-
Explain why an object moving in a circle experiences centripetal acceleration.
-
Define centripetal force and identify the forces that can provide it.
-
Calculate centripetal acceleration.
-
Calculate centripetal force for objects moving in circular paths.
-
Apply equations relating speed, radius and angular velocity.
-
