Moments & Torque
Introduction
Moments and torque describe the turning effect of forces and are fundamental concepts in AQA A Level Physics. They explain how forces cause objects to rotate and are essential for analysing equilibrium, rotational motion and many practical engineering systems. Students should understand how to calculate moments and torque, apply the principle of moments, and distinguish between clockwise and anticlockwise rotations.
AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.4.2.1 Moments
What You Need to Know
-
Define the moment of a force.
-
Calculate the moment using the perpendicular distance from the pivot.
-
State the unit of moment (N m).
-
Understand that moments can act clockwise or anticlockwise.
-
Apply the principle of moments to objects in equilibrium.
-
Define torque as the turning effect produced by a couple.
-
Calculate the torque produced by a couple.
-
Distinguish between a single force producing a moment and a couple producing torque.
-
Solve quantitative problems involving moments, couples and equilibrium.
