Simple Harmonic Motion

Introduction

Simple harmonic motion (SHM) is a type of oscillatory motion in which the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to its displacement from the equilibrium position and is always directed towards that position. This topic introduces the motion of oscillating systems such as springs and pendulums, together with the relationships between displacement, velocity, acceleration, frequency and energy.

AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.5.2.1 Simple Harmonic Motion

What You Need to Know

  • Define simple harmonic motion (SHM).

  • Describe the relationship between displacement, velocity and acceleration during SHM.

  • Explain why the acceleration is always directed towards the equilibrium position.

  • Recognise examples of simple harmonic motion, including mass-spring systems.

  • Calculate the period and frequency of oscillations.

  • Interpret displacement-time, velocity-time and acceleration-time graphs for SHM.

  • Describe the transfer of energy between kinetic and potential energy during oscillation.

  • Solve quantitative problems involving displacement, period, frequency and oscillatory motion.

With Sarah's help my daughter managed to gain an A* in her Physics A Level exams (almost 100% on paper 2!) and was able to gain entry to UCL. We are so proud and cannot thank Sarah enough.

Sarah transformed my daughter's approach to Physics. Her examiner insight was invaluable for boosting her final GCSE grade from a 7 to a 9.
