Conservation of Energy
Introduction
The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred or transformed from one form to another. This fundamental principle underpins much of AQA A Level Physics and is used to analyse a wide range of mechanical systems, from moving vehicles to falling objects and oscillating systems. Students should be able to identify energy transfers and apply conservation of energy to solve quantitative problems.
AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.4.2.4 Conservation of Energy
What You Need to Know
-
State the principle of conservation of energy.
-
Identify different forms of energy, including kinetic, gravitational potential and internal energy.
-
Describe how energy is transferred between stores.
-
Apply conservation of energy to mechanical systems.
-
Calculate changes in kinetic and gravitational potential energy.
-
Understand that some energy transfers are useful while others are dissipated to the surroundings.
-
Solve quantitative problems involving energy conservation and energy transfers.
