Stable and Unstable
Nuclei
Introduction
Stable and unstable nuclei build upon the ideas introduced in atomic structure and help explain why some atoms are radioactive. Understanding nuclear stability is essential for studying radioactivity, nuclear Physics and particle interactions later in the AQA A Level Physics course.
In this topic, students learn about isotopes, the forces acting within the nucleus, and the processes of alpha and beta-minus decay. Students also develop their understanding of how radioactive decay changes proton number and nucleon number, and how nuclear equations can be used to represent these changes.
