Rutherford's Alpha Scattering Experiment
Introduction
Rutherford's alpha scattering experiment transformed our understanding of atomic structure. By firing alpha particles at a thin sheet of gold foil, Rutherford and his colleagues discovered that atoms contain a small, dense, positively charged nucleus. This experiment overturned the earlier plum pudding model and laid the foundations for the modern nuclear model of the atom.
