Kinetic Theory

Introduction

The kinetic theory of gases explains the behaviour of gases by considering the motion of their molecules. Gas pressure, temperature and internal energy can all be understood by studying the movement and collisions of particles. This model provides the foundation for the ideal gas equation and many of the thermal physics topics studied in AQA A Level Physics.

AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.9.1 Kinetic Theory

What You Need to Know

  • Describe the assumptions made in the kinetic theory model of an ideal gas.

  • Explain that gas molecules move in constant random motion.

  • State that gas molecules undergo perfectly elastic collisions with each other and the walls of the container.

  • Explain how gas pressure arises from collisions between molecules and the container walls.

  • Describe the relationship between the average kinetic energy of molecules and the absolute temperature of the gas.

  • Understand the meaning of internal energy for an ideal gas.

  • Explain the limitations of the ideal gas model.

  • Apply the kinetic theory model to explain the behaviour of gases under different conditions.

With Sarah's help my daughter managed to gain an A* in her Physics A Level exams (almost 100% on paper 2!) and was able to gain entry to UCL. We are so proud and cannot thank Sarah enough.

Sarah transformed my daughter's approach to Physics. Her examiner insight was invaluable for boosting her final GCSE grade from a 7 to a 9.
