Collisions of atoms with electrons &
Fluorescent tubes
Introduction
Collisions between electrons and atoms provide important evidence for the existence of discrete energy levels within atoms. When electrons transfer energy to atoms, the atoms can become excited and later emit electromagnetic radiation as they return to lower energy states.
In this topic, students learn how collisions between electrons and atoms support the quantum model of the atom. Students also explore how these principles are applied in fluorescent tubes, which use excited atoms to produce visible light efficiently.
