Should Your Child Take A Level Physics? A Guide for Parents After GCSE Results

GCSE results are finally here. After months of revision, exams and waiting, your child now has their grades in front of them — and suddenly the decisions about sixth form and A Levels feel very real.


If Physics is one of the subjects they are considering, you may be wondering:


Is A Level Physics actually a good choice for my child?


As a Physics teacher and tutor who has taught GCSE and A Level students for over 15 years, this is a question I hear regularly from parents.


A Level Physics is undoubtedly challenging. However, for the right student, it can also be one of the most interesting, rewarding and useful A Levels available.


Here are the things I would consider before making the final decision.


1. Start With Their GCSE Physics Result — But Don't Look at the Grade Alone


The GCSE result is an obvious place to start.


Most sixth forms and colleges set their own entry requirements, so you should always check the requirements of the institution your child plans to attend. As a general guide, students will normally need a strong GCSE result in Physics or Combined Science, and many sixth forms also have a Mathematics requirement.


However, a grade doesn't tell us everything.


I'd also ask:


  • How hard did your child have to work for that grade?

  • Were they consistently strong throughout the course?

  • Did they understand the Physics, or were they mainly memorising methods before the examination?

  • Which parts of GCSE Physics did they enjoy?

  • How confident are they with the mathematical side of the subject?


A student who achieved a very high grade but disliked every minute of Physics isn't necessarily a better candidate than a student who achieved a slightly lower grade but genuinely enjoyed solving Physics problems.


2. Be Prepared for a Significant Step Up From GCSE

This is probably the most important point I would make to parents.


A Level Physics is considerably harder than GCSE Physics.


Students aren't simply learning more facts. They are expected to apply their knowledge to unfamiliar situations, combine several ideas within one problem and decide for themselves which principles and equations they need.


In fact, application is a major part of A Level science assessment. Students need to move beyond simply remembering what they were taught and become confident problem solvers.


This is often why students who found GCSE Physics relatively straightforward can initially be surprised by A Level.


That doesn't mean they shouldn't take it.


It simply means they should start Year 12 expecting to be challenged.


3. How Good Is Their Maths?


This is the question I would pay particularly close attention to.


A Level Physics contains a substantial amount of mathematics. Government subject requirements specify that at least 40% of the assessment of A Level Physics involves mathematical skills.


Students will encounter algebra, graphs, trigonometry, logarithms, standard form, proportional relationships and rearranging increasingly complicated equations.


They do not have to take A Level Mathematics in order to study A Level Physics, unless their particular sixth form requires it.


However, being comfortable with GCSE Maths makes an enormous difference.

If your child enjoys manipulating equations, interpreting graphs and solving numerical problems, that is a very encouraging sign.


If Maths has always been a major struggle, I would think much more carefully about whether Physics is the right choice — or consider putting some additional mathematical preparation in place before September.


4. Do They Actually Enjoy Physics?


This sounds obvious, but it sometimes gets forgotten when A Levels are being chosen strategically.


A Level Physics covers some fascinating areas, including:


  • particles and quantum physics

  • electricity

  • mechanics

  • waves

  • materials

  • thermal physics

  • gravitational and electric fields

  • magnetic fields

  • nuclear physics


Depending on the examination board, students may also study topics such as astrophysics, medical physics or engineering physics.


If your child is naturally curious about how and why things work, Physics can be enormously satisfying.


Students who ask questions, enjoy puzzles and aren't frustrated when the answer isn't immediately obvious often thrive in the subject.


5. What Other A Levels Are They Taking?


It's also worth looking at Physics as part of the complete A Level combination.

Physics combines particularly naturally with:


Mathematics – probably the most complementary subject.

Further Mathematics – particularly useful for students considering Physics, Mathematics or some highly mathematical university courses.

Chemistry – a strong combination for students interested in physical sciences.

Computer Science – increasingly useful for students interested in technology, modelling and computing.


There are plenty of other perfectly valid combinations too.


The important question isn't whether your child's subjects look impressive together. It is whether they support the university courses, apprenticeships or careers your child may eventually want to pursue.


6. What Could A Level Physics Lead To?


One of the major advantages of Physics is the number of routes it can help keep open.

It is particularly relevant for students considering areas such as:


  • Physics

  • Engineering

  • Astrophysics

  • Mathematics

  • Computer Science

  • Electronics

  • Robotics

  • Aerospace

  • Data science

  • Renewable energy and energy technology

  • Some finance and quantitative careers


Even if your child doesn't eventually study Physics at university, the analytical, mathematical and problem-solving skills developed through the subject are extremely transferable.


When choosing A Levels, the government's Skills for Careers guidance similarly recommends considering subjects your child enjoys and is good at, subjects they may need for future study or careers, and subjects that help keep future options open.


7. What If They Only Just Got the Required Grade?


This is where I would avoid making a decision based purely on a number.

Suppose the sixth form requires a grade 6 and your child has achieved exactly a 6.

Does that mean they shouldn't take Physics?


Not necessarily.


I'd want to know why they achieved that grade.


Perhaps they struggled with examination technique. Perhaps there were particular topics they never properly understood. Perhaps their mathematical skills need strengthening. Or perhaps they improved enormously during Year 11 and are now in a much stronger position than their overall grade suggests.


A student who genuinely wants to study Physics and is prepared to work consistently can make substantial progress.


However, if they scraped the entry requirement despite working extremely hard, dislike Maths and aren't particularly interested in Physics, I would think carefully before committing to the course.


The goal isn't simply to get onto A Level Physics.


It's to choose subjects in which they have a realistic opportunity to succeed.


8. What If They Got an 8 or 9?


A high GCSE grade is an excellent starting point — but it isn't a guarantee that A Level Physics will be easy.


One of the biggest adjustments for very able students can actually be discovering that they can no longer rely on understanding something immediately.


At A Level, they may meet questions they cannot solve on their first attempt.

That's normal.


The students who tend to progress best are those who are prepared to practise difficult questions, analyse their mistakes and keep going when a problem initially seems impossible.


Resilience becomes just as important as ability.


So, Should Your Child Choose A Level Physics?


I'd be positive about A Level Physics if your child:


  • achieved a solid GCSE result in Physics or Combined Science

  • is reasonably confident with Maths

  • genuinely enjoys Physics

  • likes solving problems rather than simply memorising information

  • is prepared to practise regularly

  • understands that A Level will be significantly more challenging than GCSE

  • may be interested in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, technology or another related field


I'd be more cautious if they are choosing it simply because they achieved a good GCSE grade, because somebody else thinks they should, or because they believe it will look impressive on a university application.


Two years is a long time to study a subject you don't enjoy.


My Advice to Students Starting A Level Physics This September


If your child has decided to take Physics, there is no need for them to spend the remainder of the summer trying to teach themselves the entire Year 12 course.

Instead, I would concentrate on making sure their GCSE foundations are secure.

In particular, revise:


  • rearranging equations

  • standard form

  • significant figures

  • units and prefixes

  • graphs and gradients

  • basic trigonometry

  • vectors

  • forces and motion

  • electricity

  • energy


Students who arrive in September confident with these fundamentals have a much easier transition into A Level work.


A Final Thought for Parents


A Level Physics has a reputation for being difficult — and there is some truth behind that reputation.


But difficult doesn't mean unsuitable.


For students who enjoy the subject, have a reasonable mathematical foundation and are willing to work consistently, it can be an exceptionally rewarding A Level.

GCSE results give you useful information about where your child is starting.

They shouldn't necessarily make the decision for them.


The better question is:


Does your child have the interest, foundations and determination needed to become good at A Level Physics?


If the answer is yes, then Physics could be an excellent choice.
