Electromagnetic Induction
Introduction
Electromagnetic induction is the process by which an electromotive force (emf) is induced when the magnetic flux linkage through a conductor changes. This principle underpins the operation of generators, transformers and many modern electrical technologies. Understanding electromagnetic induction is essential for explaining how electrical energy can be generated from mechanical motion.
AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.7.4.3 Electromagnetic Induction
What You Need to Know
-
Explain that an emf is induced when the magnetic flux linkage through a conductor changes.
-
State the conditions required for electromagnetic induction to occur.
-
Describe how changing the magnetic field, coil area or orientation affects magnetic flux linkage.
-
Explain how moving a conductor through a magnetic field induces an emf.
-
Understand that a greater rate of change of magnetic flux linkage produces a larger induced emf.
-
Describe practical methods of producing electromagnetic induction.
-
Apply equations involving magnetic flux linkage and induced emf.
-
Solve quantitative problems involving electromagnetic induction.
