Diffraction
Introduction
Diffraction is the spreading of waves as they pass through a gap or around the edge of an obstacle. The amount of diffraction depends on the wavelength of the wave and the size of the gap or obstacle. Understanding diffraction helps explain a wide range of wave phenomena and provides further evidence that light behaves as a wave.
AQA A Level Physics Specification: 3.5.1.4 Diffraction
What You Need to Know
-
Define diffraction as the spreading of waves when they pass through a gap or around an obstacle.
-
Describe how the amount of diffraction depends on the wavelength and the size of the gap.
-
Explain why maximum diffraction occurs when the gap is approximately the same size as the wavelength.
-
Compare the diffraction of different types of waves.
-
Describe diffraction using wavefront diagrams.
-
Understand that diffraction demonstrates the wave nature of light.
-
Explain practical examples of diffraction, including sound waves and water waves.
-
Solve qualitative and quantitative problems involving diffraction.

With Sarah's help my daughter managed to gain an A* in her Physics A Level exams (almost 100% on paper 2!) and was able to gain entry to UCL. We are so proud and cannot thank Sarah enough.
Sarah transformed my daughter's approach to Physics. Her examiner insight was invaluable for boosting her final GCSE grade from a 7 to a 9.
